NSPCC Accreditation Portfolio Submitted
After a year of hard work, I have finally submitted my portfolio for NSPCC Accreditation. As with any training or qualification, I embarked on this journey with a determination to become a better trainer, learner, and professional.
It began with a two-part, six-day NSPCC training course for trainers at the NCVO Centre, near King's Cross Station, in February 2024. As the sole male in a group of 16, I wondered whether the administrator responsible for enrolments and communications would have even noticed, and if so, what they thought of the gender imbalance.
Although gender and sex have never been an issue for me, I am keenly aware that I speak from a position of relative privilege. As a white heterosexual male, I have never faced the discrimination or abuse that some within our group would undoubtedly have faced and continue to experience in their personal, social, and professional lives.
I recall being struck by how welcome and comfortable I felt upon my arrival, an atmosphere created by our expert NSPCC trainer, who was responsible for guiding our development. I will never forget the principle she shared: “Course members need to feel psychologically safe, welcome, and appreciated in the training environment.”
Having built strong relationships with a highly skilled and passionate group of professionals, I often wonder what they are all doing now and hope they have been able to overcome the ever-increasing and competing demands on their time, enabling them to deliver the training they are so capable and passionate about.
Finally, I would like to sincerely thank two outstanding professionals. The first is Anjum Mouj, whose expert knowledge, skills, and passion for safeguarding and child protection inspired everyone on the TfT Course to learn, develop, and exceed even their expectations in designing and delivering training. The second is my NSPCC Assessor, Andrew Richardson, who has consistently encouraged me to think more critically, examine more thoroughly, and reflect more deeply on my knowledge, understanding, skills, and practice.
I hope one day to repay the support I have received from the NSPCC by delivering Train the Trainer Courses myself. Who knows what the future holds?
